Why to start a Family Therapy?

Family Therapy, also called ‘Systemic Therapy’ is a therapeutic adaptation of a larger interdisciplinary field known as systems theory. Paul Watzlawick, Gregory Bateson and Virginia Satir highly contributed to the development and implementation of Family Therapy as a therapeutic method internationally.

Systems theory is a study of the complex systems present in nature, science and society. It explores any group of objects that work together and interact with each other. Here families are considered as a system because each family member influences and interacts with all the other family members. Thus, common family problems such as divorce and separation; illness or death of a loved one; school-related problems or parent-child conflict affect the entire family dynamic i.e. if one family member has a problem, then it affects the rest of the family.

Family Therapy is proven to be effective in a range of issues, such as relationship difficulties; psychosexual/intimacy problems; domestic violence; trauma impacting on relationships; gender identity issues; alcohol and drug abuse; adjustment to chronic physical illness/bereavement; schizophrenia as well as infancy problems (sleep, feeding and attachment); child abuse and neglect; eating disorders; child and adolescent conduct problems; emotional problems (depression, anxiety, grief, suicidal thoughts, bipolar disorder); drug abuse and many others.

HOW DOES FAMILY THERAPY WORK?

When I work with families, I help them better understand how their communication and interactions are organised. It is also important to recognise and become aware of the strengths and weaknesses within the family system, so we can set up goals and think about strategies to resolve the identified problems.

Do not worry. Family therapy does not aim to take sides or blame individuals. It will instead engage you in sharing an understanding of the views of each other. We talk about your concerns and I will ask questions about how you feel and think. We discuss together the family beliefs and the point of view of everyone involved in the therapy sessions, so I can provide you with detailed feedback where needed.

In comparison to Psychodynamic Therapy where I mostly focus on listening to you, here I will be more active in asking questions and providing you with relevant feedback.

WHAT ARE THE OUTCOMES OF FAMILY THERAPY?

Family Therapy helps you better understand and improve your family communication and relationship, specifically at times of major changes and stress. It might also reduce the feelings of isolation felt by a family member affected with chronic and terminal condition (e.g. cancer) or mental health issues (e.g. schizophrenia, psychosis, depression). This therapy has shown excellent results in the treatment of marital and partnership discords, as well as problems mainly affecting your children.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE FAMILY THERAPY?

It is not time consuming as you can work with me from your home during your own time. I will be available in accordance with your time zone, no matter where you live.

The sessions are confidential with a focus on safeguarding your privacy, dignity and integrity. They are also customised and personalised with respect to your specific and personal needs.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL BE NEEDED?

Therapy length will depend upon the family’s specific issue. Generally, 5 to 10 sessions are required for long-term results.
