DecHow can transferable skills help you grow in your career?
Transferable skills are qualities and competences that you have learnt and developed in one situation that you can use and apply to another situation. Transferable skills refer to theoretical, social, cultural and practical knowledge you acquire throughout your life, for example in school, in university, at work, in other words in every situation you experience.
When people say that they start something from the beginning, they actually transfer all the skills and knowledge they have already acquired to the new project or activity. They don’t start from scratch, they actually renovate and reinvent themselves.
When a future employer invites you for an interview, they want to know what your specific knowledge is; what your attitudes when approaching things are, i.e. how motivated and enthusiastic you are; what will your personality and personal qualities bring to the company; what are your strengths and talents and what is your experience, including work history, academic qualifications and training, voluntary work and personal experiences.
Here are some ideas that will show you how your transferable skills may help you grow in your career.
You adapt more easily to new work environments
As you all know, employers are looking for people with experience who are able to do multiple tasks and take on different roles. Whilst preparing your job interview, make a list of all the skills you have and select those in which the interviewer could be potentially interested. If you are able to demonstrate that your skills apply to a wide range of things, you can be sure that the interviewer will take note. Transferable skills can highlight your potential to be an asset to the new team.
You are more flexible
Keep in mind that employers want to recruit people who can flex within the role they have. The more your skillset is diverse, the greater your value to the company is.
You have a greater potential
Transferable experience increases your creativity and better helps you solve problems. When interviewing you, many employers will look for your ability to solve potential problems rather than having the exact skill. A skills is something that you have already acquired. A potential is something that you continuously and gradually develop.
When I founded Angel Psychological Therapy, I didn’t know anything about business. As a very experienced clinical psychologist and researcher, I knew what discipline, hard work, determination and perseverance were. I said to myself: ‘You start to do this, you focus on the journey and you forget about the result for now. The main thing is to grow your audience, get satisfied clients who will recommend you and provide a high-quality content’. As I am a researcher, I am very good in searching the scientific databases and in writing quickly and efficiently. I am using these skills to be present on social networks and to develop my blog and vlog activities. My scientific knowledge helps me create a high-standard content and gives me some security. I can say: ‘I know that my content is good and I can keep going’. If you would like to learn more about my story, click here.
