Four ways to become a leader at work

Many of my private clients don’t like their job. The work environment is often listed as reason number 1 that makes them feel unhappy and unvalued. It’s often described as stressful and toxic. Then, naturally people want to leave their job as they think that once they change the environment, things will get better. Do you know what? This rarely happens. Leaving your job is sometimes not a good strategy. It’s not about the environment. It’s about yourself. Don’t change your environment. Change the way you think, behave and feel in this environment.

Here are four ways that will help you see yourself from a different angle at work.

Give yourself positive feedbacks

Often, the way you see yourself may be limiting and may prevents you from achieving great things. This could be due to a low self-esteem or feelings of insecurity. Keep in mind that as a result, people can see you as you see yourself, which could create a kind of distorted understanding of who you are and what you are really capable of.

It’s important to work on your self-confidence and give yourself positive feedbacks. Celebrate success even the smallest one.

Be proactive and express yourself

Begin to speak your mind and share what you think. In this way, you will show your colleagues and hierarchy that you are assertive and that you feel secure. Share your ideas and don’t hesitate to initiate actions. People who stand out are more visible. Your colleagues and hierarchy will trust more someone who is visible and who takes actions.

Give value to your work

If you have read my article, entitled “Five ways to build a successful career” that you can access here, you might know that successful people are those who love their work and who find meaning in what they do. Giving value and meaning is an excellent motivator that enables you to grow your potential and to expand your horizon.

Help others

True leaders are those who help others. Success doesn’t involve only playing for yourself. Respect your colleagues and recognise the value they are adding too. Help and mentor them if needed and see your work environment as a dynamic body that is able to change at each moment.
