Three ways to improve your communication with your partner

The ability to communicate with your partner openly and efficiently is at the core of a healthy and strong relationship. If you have a feeling that your partner is distracted; if you feel unheard and misunderstood, you might think to improve your communication skills.

Here are three tips that will help you become a better communicator.

Initiate open and sincere dialogues

A good way to improve your communication with your partner is to initiate open and sincere dialogues. Open up to your partner means being able to fully express and verbalise your thoughts, dreams and projects. In other words, don’t be afraid to talk about what goes well and what goes wrong.

Every time you keep silence and you hide your emotions, you build walls between both of you, which contributes to superficial relations. If you make the decision to be more open and emotionally vulnerable, then you better connect to your partner.

Get the overall picture. Stop focusing on one thing

If you would like to improve your communication with your partner, start to pay attention to the whole picture. Stop focusing on separate aspects in your relationship such as the attention your partner is giving you; the words they are using when they talk to you; the gifts they are offering. Consider your relationship as one whole picture and ask yourself: ‘Even if sometimes things are not perfect, is it worth going ahead?’; ‘What should I improve and what should I ask my partner to improve?’. This way of thinking unconsciously motivates you to continuously improve yourself. Improvement then becomes an automatic habit and a lifestyle.

People who tend to focus on separate aspects in their relationship, often see it negatively and behave negatively. If you want to learn more about toxic behaviours, click here

Enjoy the moment and be present

To communicate more efficiently with your partner, try to be a 100% present when you are with each other. Switch your attention away from your professional and social responsibilities and focus on what your partner wants. Make them feel valued, loved and heard. The easiest way to make a loved-one feel undervalued and unhappy is to constantly be on your phone or to give a great attention to the daily tasks.

Don’t hesitate to write down some rules that will help you structure your couple goals. Written rules are much more powerful than verbal ones, as writing materialises the ideas you want to apply and makes you feel more responsible.
